An Underwater Scam During the California Gold Rush

The 19th-century was a good time to be a gold zealot in California, thanks to the discovery of gold in the state and the ensuing gold rush. But many people were easily persuaded by get-rich-quick schemes.

For example, more than 20 million tons of gold particles are dissolved in the world’s oceans. But can it be extracted? Along comes Rev. Prescott Jernegan in 1896, who created a device made up of a wooden box, a pan full of mercury and a secret ingredient. The box was lowered into the sea, and a current was passed through the mercury, supposedly attracting gold particles. A test found that more than $100 worth of gold accumulated in the box.

Jernegan formed a company specializing in this gold extraction process, and stock in the company was soon offered. It quickly stormed up to $150 per share. Jernegan and his assistant, Charles Fisher, cashed out for $400,000.

Thing is, Jernegan and Fisher disappeared and their gold accumulators stopped working. It was discovered that Fisher was a trained diver who had gone underwater and placed gold in the devices.

Talk about fool’s gold!
